Museum Day, Ft. Worth

We met cousin Susan and her daughter Alex at the Amon Carter Museum to begin our day. I can't remember the last time I had seen Susan and I had never met Alex so this was going to be a wonderful treat to get to know them while enjoying the Texas art scene. Alex, who is 12 is very interested in art and it was a joy to see a young, almost teen so interested in the varied mediums of sculpture, painting, etc.

The Amon Carter focuses on American art and currently is featuring an exhibit on the Hudson River School. Thomas Cole's, The Course of Empire, (five massive canvasses) which charts the history of an imaginary nation was incredible in its detail. Since we will be spending time in Santa Fe on this trip and I just finished reading, Portrait of an Artist, Georgia O'Keefe, I really enjoyed studying her work exhibited here.

I was taken with the walls in the lobby area of the building. They appeared to be concrete walls stamped with a shell and fossil motif but learned that this is actually local limestone formed thousands of years ago, the shells remnants of an ancient sea.

Everyone was was hungry so we strolled down the boulevard to the Kimball Museum for lunch. It was a gorgeous sunny day in the low 80's, a welcome change from the 40's at home in Wisconsin. The construction for the addition to the Kimball was on our left and the once large area of lawn and trees where locals enjoyed picnics will be sacrificed to a new space for art and classes. Some green space will be restored when the project is completed in 2013. My next post will be on the Kimball, including artwork created by Uncle Clatus during lunch!
