Desert Museum and Zoo~ Carlsbad

It was quite chilly when we woke up today and clouds/fog obscured the hills to our west. Ron and Barb had plans to take us to the Desert Museum located on one of them but we would need for the clouds to lift and the temperatures to rise. The museum is a botanical garden with plantings of native species, water features with lilies and a small zoo.

Unfortunately the near zero temperatures during the winter (very unusual for the area) had damaged or killed a lot of the plants. It was difficult to see large areas that had been decimated by the cold weather. However, there were plenty of plants that were thriving, few of which I know the names of but I was fascinated by their patterns.

'Starfish "- not a native species.

It was a wonderful walk and we got to see some rattlesnakes on display as well as some native birds and some mammals. Of course Ron and Barb caught sight of some birds in the wild and pointed out what a species they were. It added to the richness of the whole experience. I think Buz is becoming more interested in birding as the days go by!
